Dr. Joseph Wells joined MVP Kids Care in 1986. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo, where he also completed his internship in pediatrics. He finished his residency and chief residency at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He has a special interest in children’s injuries and has published reports on Wii, Heely, escalator,and mixed martial arts trauma in the American Journal of Diseases of Children, Pediatrics, Clinical Pediatrics, and the Journal of Trauma. He and his wife, gynecologist Dr. Valerie Sorkin-Wells, have 3 children. Dr. Wells is Board Certified in Pediatrics and has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics since 1987. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Interests Dr Wells enjoys competitive running, current events, and the Fighting Irish.
Dr. Patton attended medical school at the University of Utah. He did his residency training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He is Board Certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is married and has 6 children. Dr. Patton has been a part of MVP Kids Care for the last 20 years.
Dr. Broome is originally from Atlanta. He attended Davidson College majoring in Religion then attended medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital in 1996. He is Board Certified, is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and continues to train pediatric residents and medical students. Dr. Broome also occasionally works at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Urgent Care centers. Dr. Broome is interested in sports medicine and volunteers as the team doctor on the sidelines for three high schools in the valley. His other areas of interest in medicine include dermatology and general well-child care. He loves his vocation of taking care of pediatric patients and their families and would continue practicing pediatrics even if he won the lottery.
Dr. Broome is married to his best friend and they have three children and two Portuguese Water Dogs. His free time is spent with them, playing and coaching tennis and soccer and ultimate frisbee, and reading history books.
Dr. Shulski grew up as an Army Dependent and was lucky enough to live in California, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, North Carolina, Alaska & Germany. He attended Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina where he majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry. After college he worked as an assistant manager at a Ronald McDonald House with the families of pediatric cancer patients. He attended medical school at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina before moving to Phoenix in 1998 for Pediatric Residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center. Dr Shulski is Board Certified & a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He recently served two years as Chief of the Medical Staff of Maryvale Hospital. Dr. Shulski is married to his college sweetheart and has three beautiful children.
Dr. Holmgren is a rare native of Phoenix, Arizona. She graduated from the University of Arizona and then attended medical school at Midwestern University – Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. She began her pediatric residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and then completed her training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital after the programs merged. Her interests include breastfeeding, special needs children, preventative medicine and well child care. She is married to her high school sweetheart and they have two children.
Dr. Yvonne Grassl, a born-and-bred Midwesterner and native of southwestern Michigan, brings 15 years of pediatric experience to the MVP Kids Care family. She received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Hope College, her MD from Wayne State University’s School of Medicine in Michigan, and completed her residency program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Dr. Grassl spent six years in a large Michigan pediatrics office before relocating to practice medicine in Arizona. She joined MVP Kids care in 2015 following eight years at Estrella Pediatrics in West Phoenix. Dr. Grassl has two young children – boys Calvin and Emmett. She also devotes time and attention to a number of charities near and dear to her heart, among them the Crisis Nursery/Phoenix Children’s Shelter, the Ronald McDonald House – Phoenix, and Heart for the City AZ, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of impoverished children across the state.
Dr. Grassl spends her rare off-hours playing tennis, loving on the family’s beloved American Hairless Terriers, and attending her sons various sports practices, games, and events.
Dr. Chris Cwik was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and has more than 15 years in pediatric medicine under his belt. He is a graduate of Knox College (Galesburg, IL) with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and College Honors in Biology and the University of Tennessee – Memphis with an MD. Dr. Cwik honed his skills as a resident at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center and a lab assistant at St. Jude’s Cancer Research Hospital before continuing on with fellowship training in the Hematology/Oncology unit at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center/Children’s Hospital in Seattle. He is a past-Chapter President of the American Student Medical Association. Dr. Cwik has been in private practice since 2002, both in Michigan and here in Phoenix. He has special interests in pediatric hematology, oncology, nutrition and sports medicine. He is also fluent in Spanish, which goes a long way among Phoenix residents.
Dr. Roth grew up in New Jersey and has been slowly making her way west across the country! She graduated from Kenyon College (Gambier, OH) and spent several years working in the research world in Denver, CO, before attending medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. She completed her Pediatric residency at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center program in 2017, and was thrilled to join MVP Kids Care that summer.
Michelle Howland is an Arizona native.
She graduated from the University of Arizona and completed her Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Midwestern University.
Kristen Buchanan attended Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio and graduated with a degree in Psychology. She completed her Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies from AT Stillwell University in Arizona.
Mariah was born in Germany where she spent a few years of her childhood before her father was re-stationed to Luke Air Force Base here in Arizona. She was a collegiate volleyball player and spent her time playing in both Arizona and New Mexico before attending Grand Canyon University where she received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She spent 2 years practicing as a bedside Registered Nurse at Phoenix Children’s Hospital specializing in Trauma, Neurology/ Neurosurgery, and Kidney/ Liver Transplant patients before moving into a role at PCH as a Clinical Nurse Case Manager. Mariah went on to The University of Arizona to earn her Doctorate of Nursing Practice with an emphasis as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in December 2017 and is ecstatic to join MVP Kids Care at the beginning of the 2018 year.
